Can ChatGPT Find Your School? A 20-Minute Audit Any Marketing Team Can Run

Something I keep watching higher ed marketing teams miss: they've optimized their website for Google, but they haven't checked whether an AI assistant can find their school.
Prospective students and families aren't just Googling "community colleges in Colorado" anymore. They're asking ChatGPT. They're using Google AI Overviews. They're searching inside Instagram and YouTube.
And your program pages might not be showing up in any of those places.
The good news: you don't need new software to fix this. You need to make the content you already have clearer, more structured, and easier for both humans and AI to understand.
Here's a 20-minute audit any marketing team can run for free:
Step 1: Ask three plain-language questions (5 minutes)
Open ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews and ask:
- "What are the best community colleges in [your state] for [your top program]?"
- "How much does [your program] cost at [your school]?"
- "What do I need to apply to [your program] at [your school]?"
Write down what the AI says. Is it accurate? Is it current? Does it mention your school at all?
Step 2: Compare the AI answer to your program page (5 minutes)
Open your top program page. Does it clearly answer:
- What the program is and who it's for?
- Total cost (not just "varies by credit")?
- Admission requirements in plain language?
- Start dates and deadlines?
- What students can do after completing it?
If your page is missing these answers, the AI can't find them either — because AI reads the same page you do.
Step 3: Fix the biggest gap (10 minutes)
Pick the one answer the AI got most wrong. Find the corresponding section on your program page. Rewrite it as a clear, direct answer to the question a student would actually ask.
Use plain language. Add an H2 heading that matches the question ("How Much Does the Nursing Program Cost?"). Put the answer in the first sentence. Add the details below.
That's it. One page, one question, one clear answer. Do this for your top five program pages and you've materially improved your AI search visibility — without spending a dollar.
The pattern
AI search isn't a new channel to conquer. It's the same content you already have, structured so both humans and machines can understand it. Clear answers win everywhere — Google, ChatGPT, and the student sitting at their kitchen table at 10 PM trying to figure out if your school is right for them.
